January 23, 2008 - Micro Power, the global leader in portable power systems for mission-critical equipment, today announced that its portable power system for medical life support devices won Battery Power Product & Technology magazine’s first annual Innova Award in the Outstanding Application category. The Innova Award program recognizes companies that are striving for excellence and achieving technology breakthroughs.

Micro Power Electronics designed a portable power system specifically for life-support devices. The system consists of two batteries, each with 95 Wh of capacity, that are charged with a “smart” micro controlled power management system.

The two battery design allows the batteries to be “hot swapped” for uninterrupted use and unlimited runtime. The complete subsystem occupies less space than the previous generation of batteries, yet the runtime of the two batteries is increased nearly 50%. The batteries feature the latest in gas gauging, enabled by Texas Instruments’ Impedance Track technology. Operating parameters such as remaining runtime, charge time and low power can be read conveniently off the LED display. Each battery is under the UN/DOT limit for class 9 hazardous shipments.

The charger is now incorporated in a portable charging cradle. Previous versions of the batteries were charged with an external power adapter. The charger accepts 12V DC, 24V DC and 110-240AC, which allows the batteries to be charged from a car or wheelchair, as well as an AC wall outlet.
